YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF MONDAYS!

One of the biggest lies we tell ourselves as individuals dealing with obesity and food issues is that we will get started on Monday. Layered with that is the lie that we have an unlimited number of Mondays ahead to choose from when it comes to taking action. The truth are that the mythical magical Monday often never comes. And Mondays pass. Our limited supply of them as human beings with measurable life spans get wasted. Today, which I realize is indeed a Monday, I want to share some action steps for turning this day into your final “I’m gonna do it Monday!”

Up first? You have to get used to being uncomfortably honest with yourself. Motivation is not a magic gift some are given and some are not. It is the sum total of our decisions to act and the consistent application of those actions. Accept that you are not unmotivated but instead you have allowed other reasons, other excuses, other BS frankly to step between you and your action. And trust me, I get that some of those excuses are big and powerful, whether they relate to your time, your family or your knowledge. One of the biggest first steps we can take on our journeys is acknowledging that we use these excuses to allow us to continue uncomfortable and often addictive patterns. It is hard to admit we are being less than honest with ourselves but it is important that we do it. 

Next? Identify the actions you need to take to move you towards your goals. What does getting started even look like to you? Is it reaching out to someone for help and guidance? Is it cleaning out your home of the foods you know should not be there? Or is it talking with your family to let them know what you will be doing, so they will keep those foods they’re still using out of your path? Build a list. Sit down and write out what needs to happen so you can hold yourself accountable and also have a visual representation on the actions you are taking. If you problem is that you don’t even know where to start, instead identify where you will be looking for that answer. Are you comfortable doing the research for yourself and building a plan, or would you feel more secure working with a coach or established program designed to give you the structure you need. 

Now don’t drag your heels making that list because here’s the biggest secret to getting your success started… Just start. Whatever it is, whatever program, whatever way of eating, whatever activity you routine you have identified, just get started. Take action! It’s simple but true that no one can do any of this for you. You must be willing to do the work and face the challenges. This is how you will ensure you are on the right path to not needing another Monday restart. You will be in action, moving forward, and building momentum. Throw away the “It’s too hards” and the “I just can’ts!” and start saying “I am doing it.” Every day, say it when you get up, say it before you go to bed, say it when you feel like stopping.
