IT’S NATIONAL PIZZA DAY!
Today (February, 9, 2022) is National Pizza Day so I figured it would be a great time to address the eternal question of, “Can I have pizza and stay keto?” The answer is yes, with a caveat! You want to find the right keto pizza alternative that fits your taste buds, your macros, and of your time. There are several brands offering pre-made keto friendly pizza crusts, and pizzas, now. They include Cappello’s, Cali-flour, KBosh Foods, and even ready to go pizza from places like Blaze. If your local pizzeria offers a keto crust or a cauliflower crust option I would encourage you to ask them for the ingredients and macros even if they have them. A lot of companies are offering cauliflower crusts that have just as many carbs and suspect ingredients as a regular flour crust. Personally though, my absolute favorite keto pizza options are homemade and I want to share my favorites with you and links to recipes if they exist!
Meatzza!
This is what it sounds like, pizza with a meat crust. This is possibly the simplest and easy to make. You roll out a layer of meat (sausage, ground beef, etc.,) bake it, top it and bake some more. You can make it very macro friendly too by varying the ingredients. Here’s a link to Primal Kitchen’s Breakfast Meatza, an awesome spin on this one!
Chicken Crust
This one is again simple and honestly it took me a few years of seeing it get bounced around before I tried it for myself. I just didn’t believe that pre-cooked canned chicken could work, and while I made it I still had my doubts. Let me tell you that when I sliced it up, I was sold! This one has a fantastic texture and taste. The recipe I used is by Keto Connect and it is a quick solid meal. Check it out here!
Skillet Cheese Crust
Now this one has been in my regular rotation for almost 5 years now! To me it gives you the best part of the pizza, bubbly melty & crispy cheese, without even having to warm up the oven. You can add sauce or not depending on your topping choices and carb needs. Often I will use pesto or no sauce at all. Fit to Serve has a great set of instructions for making this 5 minute pizza here!
Egg Loaf Pizza
Minimal ingredients and a bit of technique add up to present Coach Jon’s awesome Egg Loaf Pizza! The crust is just eggs, but it’s far from an ordinary omelette. I love this recipe because it is UBER macro friendly and actually has a great texture you can lift up and hold. Check the recipe here on our site and take my advice, add some italian seasoning and garlic powder to the crust as you make it, it will be next level good!
Carnivorous Deep Dish Pizza
The Carnivorous Chef has an awesome YouTube channel full of keto and carnivore friendly recipes, and just recently I tried out his Deep Dish Pizza Recipe. It takes a little work as it is a pretty involved recipe but the end result was a delicious hearty truly deep dish pizza. Don’t miss this one, click here to see it now!
Fat Head Dough
I figured I would save this one for last as it is the most often discussed pizza recipe in the keto-verse! You blend cheese, eggs, and almond flour and magically you get a crust that very closely resembles the texture of regular pizza. I avoided this recipe for a long time because usually you find recipes that just have too high of a total carb amount for my regular usage, then I was introduced to Abby Keuhn’s website and her version of Fat Head Dough that cuts back the almond and the carbs but sacrifices none of the texture and taste. Check out Abby’s recipe on her website KetoKeuhnNutrition where everythis is under 10 grams total carbs.
So there you have it! Six ways you can make your own keto friendly pizza and celebrate this “holiday!” Most are made with ingredients you’ll find you have handy already so get to cooking and let me know how it goes!
