COACHES CAN’T DO THAT!
On any given day you can see many well intentioned coaches on the internet offering their services, their support and their knowledge. Heck, I am one of those people! Today though I want to talk about what you might see someone claiming they can do for you or even worse, things you might want a coach to do for you. These five items top the list I have gathered of things that a coach just cannot do for you, though often we wish we could!
Guarantee Numbers
So this first one is a warning. If you see a coach guaranteeing a certain number of pounds lost in a fixed number of days, run away. Run away fast and save your money. Weight loss and body recomposition are so bioindividual that anyone making a claim to every applicant that they will get the same exact results in the same exact time is wishing and hoping, but clearly not in the right. Often these coaches offer “cookie cutter” programs that set up the client for a severe caloric deficit to ensure as much loss as possible in as short of a time as possible with no focus paid to sustainability and true health.
Let It Go For You
A big part of working on your relationship with food, your body and your health is identifying the factors that you can control and the factors you cannot. The corresponding action to that is letting go of the things you cannot control that you are currently allowing to generate stress or dictate your behavior. A good coach will help you identify these factors but they cannot let them go for you. This is something only you can do and it is truly one of the most important parts of a successful sustainable weight loss journey from my perspective.
Lift Your Fork or Your Weights
A coach will help you identify better food choices and establish an activity routine. They might provide you with a meal plan or set up macros for you to follow. They will encourage you to step out of your comfort zone in both of these areas but they sadly cannot do that work for you. A coach can’t follow you around and say “NO! Don’t eat that!” or take your place on the treadmill if you’re having an off day. You lift your fork and you lift the weights with purpose and intention. Each activity allows you to grow as a stronger person who wants to be successful.
Learn For You
I am not sure if this one will make sense but I hope you will stick with me. Of course a client wants to learn from their coach and does not expect the coach to do the learning for them. That said, I think there are times where we don’t align our behavior with our knowledge and somehow expect a coach to read our minds and catch this discrepency. The best way to help yourself with this is to ask questions! If you don’t, a coach might assume you have a clear understanding of the topic at hand. There are no dumb questions and we are here to assist with your understanding and growth. It’s completely ok to say, “I am not quite sure I get that, can we go over it again?” or “I thought I approached this situation properly but clearly missed something, can you help me plan for next time?” Any good coach will enjoy these discussions!
Achieve YOUR GOALS
This last one is more a reminder to you. A coach does not achieve your goals. They help you build the habits, accountability and skills you need to achieve them but is you that crosses that finish line. It is you doing the hard work every day to get there and doggone it, you deserve the credit. So this is a reminder to work on silencing that voice inside that tries to give credit to others for your efforts. Be proud of yourself and use that energy to define what comes next. What you can and will accomplish is pretty amazing!!!
